Fire guts handloom godown in Tarn Taran, over Rs 1-cr loss
Panic gripped Tarn Taran’s busiest market area near Darbar Sahib on Saturday afternoon after a fire broke out in the godown of a handloom shop located in the tehsil bazaar.
As many as eight fire tenders battled the blaze for nearly four hours before bringing it under control. The godown is situated directly in front of the main shop, which occupies a central location in the town’s marketplace.
Nearby shopkeepers rushed to the spot and joined efforts to prevent the fire from spreading further. Shop owner Jagdeep Singh said he noticed smoke rising from the godown and immediately alerted fellow traders and the local fire brigade.
Amritpal Singh, a fireman with the Municipal Council, said additional fire brigades were summoned from Patti, Jandiala Guru and Amritsar to assist local units.
DSP (City) Jagjit Singh, who supervised the operation, said the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained. Jagdeep Singh estimated the damage at around Rs1 crore.
