Law and order under threat

In our holy city, recent violent incidents have created deep worry among residents and visitors. Several hand grenade blasts at police stations and a grenade attack on a temple have shocked everyone. These attacks occurred at a time when large groups of pilgrims were present and the police were working hard to keep the city safe. The events clearly show that our law and order situation is under threat and needs urgent improvement. To protect the city, the police must be better prepared with modern equipment and increased manpower. More trained officers should patrol the streets and guard important areas. It is also essential for the community to cooperate by reporting any unusual or suspicious activities immediately. Working together, the police and the public can restore safety and confidence in our city. Ensuring strong security measures is key to keeping our city peaceful and safe for all people; these steps are truly necessary. Vaani Mehra

Improve police intelligence network

The law and order problem of our city is not much different than past. This is because of the harsh fact that our city witnessed breakdown of law and order machinery in older regimes too. The only thing that has changed in current scenario is that blame game has increased vastly amongst political parties. Launching a terror attack on temple by terrorists was an easy job as the whole city's police was deployed on routes of Chief Ministers. In order to maintain law and order in the city, the foremost step required is to increase intelligence services. Not only our city but the whole nation lacks it. In the USA, intelligence services are so prompt that in the past, they had killed mastermind of World Trade Centre Osama Bin Laden by penetrating into Pakistan territory in a short span. Last but not the least in order to bring transparency, corruption in Punjab Police needs to be removed at the earliest. Sanjay Chawla

Serious lapses in security arrangements

The recent incidents of hand grenade blasts at police stations and the attack on a temple during a VVIP visit highlight significant lapses in law and order. To address this, strengthening intelligence networks for early threat detection and enhancing surveillance through CCTV cameras and drones is essential. Increased police presence, regular mock drills and specialised training for officials can improve emergency response. Effective coordination among the police, paramilitary forces and intelligence agencies is crucial. Promoting community involvement through awareness programmes and neighbourhood watch initiatives can also aid in identifying suspicious activities. Additionally, stricter laws, swift trials and robust border security can deter future attacks. Implementing these measures will ensure a safer and more secure environment in the city.

Create separate wing for VVIP security

Initially, the Punjab Police had been in a denial mode on the recurring grenade attacks on police installations despite being owned by perpetrators on social media. The police should have acted swiftly to trace the culprits but it tried to cover the lapses and lackadaisical security arrangements which resulted in the attack at the worship place. Amritsar is an important political and religious place that is visited by top personalities to pay obeisance at the holy places. Too much of VIP security during repeated visits has taken a toll on the city's law and order situation. Even petty crimes are on the rise, day-time snatching and looting are the order of the day. The Amritsar Commissionerate of Police (CP) should pay more attention to city residents' security than VVIP duties. It is required that a separate wing of VIP security be formed and stationed at Amritsar to deal with VIP visits and spare local police to look after holy city security paraphernalia. Anil Vinayak

Initiate crime prevention campaigns

There's an urgent need for public awareness and education among the masses. The police should initiate crime prevention campaigns for the localities. Educate residents about safety measures and how to avoid becoming victims of crime. One should introduce programmes in schools to teach students about the importance of law and media engagement. The administration should use media platforms to raise awareness about crime prevention and community safety. Mohit Sharma

Strengthen community policing in city

Community policing and building trust is a must. There is a need to foster strong relationships between police and communities to encourage cooperation and information sharing. Encourage residents to participate in neighborhood watch initiatives to monitor and report suspicious activities. Community outreach is also the need of the hour. The administration should organise regular meetings between law-enforcement and community leaders to address security concerns and build mutual understanding.

Adopt Modern policing techniques

Ensuring better law and order in a city requires a comprehensive approach involving government agencies, law enforcement, community participation and the use of technology. Strengthening of law-enforcement agencies is very much essential. The best part is to deploy more police officers in high-crime areas to deter criminal activity. It is necessary to provide regular training to law enforcement personnel on modern policing techniques, conflict resolution and community engagement. Accountability is also needed. Establish mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability in law-enforcement actions.

Act tough against criminals

After the recent attacks, the police have parked their vehicles on most of the bridges to protect police stations. It had also covered police stations with plastic sheets to protect these from grenades. However, these measures would seem irrelevant and unnecessary to a sane mind. The police should focus on improving law and order by acting tough against criminals. It is no secret that in some instances, the police and criminals are hand in glove and common people do not even get their complaints registered. If the police can improve its image and be of help to the masses, perhaps residents would start reporting about miscreants in their areas. Satpal Singh

Take strict action against law-breakers

In view of the grenade blasts for the past four months in the hallowed city of Amritsar by miscreants who are linked to foreign-based terrorists, there is a dire need to take strict action against them as this situation is disturbing law and order in the city. In this context, the police have to increase regular patrolling and do proper investigation to trace the accused involved in these crimes. The general public is also supposed to maintain law and order in the city by abiding by all rules and regulations laid down by the authorities. Moreover, it is the duty of every resident to behave in a lawful manner for the uplift of society.
