Free Wi-Fi facility for flyers to be launched at Amritsar airport soon
Passengers at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar will soon be able to enjoy free Wi-Fi services. After attending a meeting of the airport’s environment committee, Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney said work is currently underway to roll out complimentary Wi-Fi at the airport. She assured that the facility would be launched shortly for public use.
The Deputy Commissioner discussed the ongoing preparations for the upcoming 450th foundation day of Amritsar city during the meeting held with airport authorities. She said large-scale celebrations are being planned to mark this significant milestone, and dignitaries from across India and abroad are expected to participate. With lakhs of devotees and tourists anticipated to arrive for the events, detailed discussions were held on managing the expected influx at the airport.
Another major point on the agenda was the proposed expansion of the airport terminal. The Deputy Commissioner said a proposal has already been sent to the government. If approved, the expansion would enhance the airport’s status as a major gateway to Punjab, particularly for NRIs and international tourists. Currently, the terminal spans 40,000 square metres and can handle about 1,600 passengers. However, due to increasing traffic, there is a pressing need to add another 10,000 square metres of space and raise the passenger handling capacity to nearly 2,000.
Environmental concerns were also discussed during the meeting, with specific focus on measures to control bird activity in the vicinity of the airport, which poses safety challenges.
The meeting was attended by Airport Director SK Kapahi, MC Joint Commissioner Surinder Singh and officials from various departments.
