Infamous gangster Bhagwan Singh (30), a resident of the local Kajikot Road area, was shot at and injured on National Highway No.54 near Rasulpur village, 6 km from here, on Wednesday.
Old rivalry between the two rival gangs was reported to be cause behind the incident. Injured Bhagwan was admitted to a local private hospital from where he was referred to the Amritsar Hospital. The Sadar police have registered a case under Sections 307, 148,149 and 34 of the IPC, and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act.
A team of senior police officials, led by SP (Investigation) Jagjit Singh Walia, rushed to the spot to take first hand stock of the situation.
The SP said gangster Bhagwan, along with his two accomplices, was returning in a car after appearing in proceedings at the District Courts Complex, Piddi.
Five members of an opposing gang opened fire on Bhagwan leaving him injured. The attackers managed to escape. Bhagwan Singh was responsible for a number of firing incident outside Sri Guru Arjun Dev Government College and other colleges during students’ organisation elections in the past.
