The bypass road has turned into an open dumping ground, causing inconvenience to commuters and residents. What started with marriage palaces throwing waste on the roadside during wedding season has now spread, with unknown individuals also dumping garbage here.

The increasing piles of waste emanate a strong stench and unhygienic conditions. Stray dogs and cattle gather around the garbage, blocking the road and often leading to accidents. Daily commuters say the situation has become dangerous, yet little action has been taken.

Earlier, the Amritsar Municipal Corporation had asked big waste generators such as banquet halls and commercial units to set up their own waste processing units. However, very few complied and dumping continues unchecked.

Locals are demanding strict measures against dumping of waste along the roads. They also demanded regular checks and heavy fines for violators.

Rajinder Singh, a resident, said, “This problem has been persisting for months. Earlier only a few marriage palaces dumped waste, but now it seems like everyone is doing it. The smell is unbearable and the sight is awful. Authorities must clear the heaps and stop further dumping.”

Aakash, a commuter, added, “I travel this road daily and it’s unsafe. Dogs and cows suddenly run onto the road, causing accidents. Strict rules and penalties are needed to control this. A permanent solution is the only way forward.”
