The recent rise in Covid cases in the district has not only hit the general public hard but healthcare professionals as well. A large number of them, especially at Government Medical College, have tested positive in the last few days.
Of the most affected are junior resident doctors and MBBS interns, who have been closely working with patients. Sources at the college said around 20 to 22 hostellers have tested positive in the last few weeks.
However, for them the major cause of infections had been the absence of a separate place to stay during isolation on testing positive.
The problem has been presently solved with the authorities reserving a few guesthouses on the campus apart from a hostel to house positive interns and junior resident doctors.
“Earlier, positive students stayed at their hostels. So, the chances of spread of infection to other hostel mates were great. The issue was resolved after students took up the issue with the authorities,” said a leader of the Junior Resident Doctors’ Association.
