GNDU mandates Sikh history course in all departments

Preparations are underway to commemorate the 350th Martyrdom Day of Guru Tegh Bahadur, along with Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das and Bhai Dayala, under the guidance of Akal Takht.

To mark this occasion, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has constituted an advisory committee comprising eminent Sikh scholars: Dr Balkar Singh, Dr Kehar Singh, Dr Sarbjinder Singh, Sunny Oberoi (Vice-Chancellor, Vivek Sadan University, Shri Anandpur Sahib), and Dr Jaspal Kaur Kang.

The committee met today on the university campus under the chairmanship of GNDU Vice-Chancellor Karamjeet Singh and made several key decisions. These include introducing a mandatory two-credit course on Sikh history, covering the period from Guru Nanak Dev to Guru Gobind Singh (1469–1708 AD), for students across all university departments; establishing a dedicated Department of Sikh Philosophy on campus; reviving academic journals related to Sikh Studies; and launching a certificate course in Sikh Theology under the Department

of Guru Nanak Studies.

Two special seminars will also be organised in honour of Guru Tegh Bahadur, focusing on his supreme sacrifice, his contributions to the cause of religious freedom and his spiritual teachings.
