Ahead of the annual elections of the Non-Teaching Employees Association of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), scheduled for October, the University Karamchari Democratic Front has raised several demands, including pending promotions. A delegation led by the Front’s president, Hardeep Singh Nagra, met Senate member and former cabinet minister Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar. During the meeting, detailed discussions were held regarding administrative issues and the problems faced by non-teaching employees.
Nagra emphasised that the Association is committed to ensuring the rights and facilities of non-teaching employees. He appealed to the university administration and the Punjab Government to focus on waiving electricity bills for campus employees, similar to Punjab Government’s policy. “Our other demands include equipping the administrative block with ACs and LED lights, fully implementing Punjab Government notifications; construction of a community hall; implementing the Old Pension Scheme for employees recruited before 2004, releasing the pending secretariat allowance and providing group health insurance for employees,” said Nagra.
The employees have also raised issues including resolving traffic-related issues at the main gate through talks with the district administration.
Dr Nijjar carefully listened to the demands of the employees and assured his cooperation for the smooth functioning of the university and the welfare of employees.
The meeting is being considered significant ahead of the annual elections in October, where the issues of non-teaching staff will be prominently raised.
