GNDU Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh Sandhu has been given extension for another six months in tenure, making it his third extension in service as Vice-Chancellor. The extension as granted on the recommendations of a five-member committee of the Punjab Government. Dr Sandhu was appointed VC by the then Capt Amarinder Singh government in June 2017 for a term of three years. In June 2020, he was given an extension of three years and last year Governor Banwari Lal Purohit granted an extension of six months to Dr Sandhu, despite reports suggesting that state government had recommended one-year extension for him.

Dr Sandhu was former secretary, University Grants Commission, and has been committed to building research and development infrastructure of GNDU. After the news of his extension, the teaching and non-teaching associations including GNDU Non-Teaching Employees Association and Officers Association members met with VC Dr Sandhu and congratulated him on the tenure extension calling it an opportunity for university to build upon the academic and sports programmes introduced in previous years.
