DC Dalwinderjit Singh informed the Governor that floods occurred following a breach of the embankment of the Ravi river. “Due to this, 324 villages of the Makora Pattan, Gahalri, Dorangla, Kalanaur and Dera Baba Nanak areas are waterlogged,” he said.
“The district administration immediately started rescue operations with the help of local police, NDRF, BSF and Indian Army following which 5,581 people were evacuated in Army helicopters and boats,” he said.
The Governor said to deal with this natural disaster, the Punjab Cabinet, including Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, and the MLAs were engaged in relief work. He said, “The solidarity shown by Punjabis in dealing with the floods was an example in itself.” Kataria said he had apprised Union Home Minister Amit Shah of the latest situation. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to the CM over the phone. “The PM has assured to provide all possible support to deal with the crisis,” he said.
