Amritsar, January 24
Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has been awarded the certification for being ‘Eat Right Campus’ by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). It is an initiative to promote safe, healthy and sustainable food in campuses.
To fulfill the audit requirements for the scheme, the food handlers underwent Food Safety Training and Certification (FOSTAC). Attributing the achievement to teamwork of all the stakeholders, Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh Sandhu said, “Getting recognition is a sense of fulfillment to promote not only high quality services in mess and canteens but also inculcate healthy eating in campus, which is like a second home to our students. I take this opportunity to thank all the stakeholders, faculty, supporting staff, canteen contractors and our students, who have contributed in achieving this milestone.”
Dr Preet Mohinder Singh Bedi, Dean Students’ Welfare, said that GNDU has undergone a thorough assessment and evaluation of its mess, food joints and canteens within the campus. “This had been conducted in the presence of an FSSAI quality auditor authorised by the Quality Council of India (QCI). The audit is done through a checklist based on five parameters i.e., compliance to food safety and hygiene, healthy diet, food waste management, promotion of local and seasonal foods on campus, promotion and awareness on food safety and healthy diets in and around the campus.”
Dr Bedi further said that the certification would ensure safe nutritious food and promotion of healthy eating in the campus.
