The district received heavy rainfall on Friday which brought much needed relief for residents and farmers from the humidity and hot weather conditions. The rain would help farmers, who had sown paddy, especially basmati. Harpal Singh Pannu, Chief Agriculture Officer (CAO), said reports of heavy rain had been received from Patti, Bhikhiwind, Khalra, Valtoha, Khem Karan, Harike, Khadoor Sahib, Goindwal Sahib, Chohla Sahib, Sarai Amanat Khan, Chabal and other parts of the district.

Pannu said the rain was beneficial for farmers and milch animals. Kulwinder Singh, a farmer from Verowal village, said the rain would help in sowing the maize crop and would be beneficial for the vegetable crops in Khadoor Sahib and Chohla Sahib.

Sukhwant Singh, a farmer from Valtoha, said with today’s heavy rain, there would be no need to irrigate paddy fields for the next 10 days.

Besides, the heavy downpour has exposed the failure of the municipal council (MC) to drain out knee-deep rainwater in certain areas of the town. The Chabal-Amritsar bypass is the worst affected due to waterlogging.

Bikramjit Singh, Junior Engineer (JE), Irrigation Department, said there was no panic about floods as 6,400 cusecs water was flowing downstream in the Sutlej at Harike and 27,000 cusecs upstream in the Beas which was quite normal and far from the danger sign.
