Amritsar's historic Ram Bagh becomes dump yard amid civic apathy
Activists blame the municipal corporation & demand CM's intervention
The historic Ram Bagh, also known as Company Bagh, is facing severe neglect by the government and the Amritsar Municipal Corporation. Once a source of pride for Amritsar, the garden is now plagued by poor cleanliness, illegal encroachments and unchecked garbage dumping, leaving visitors disappointed and concerned about its rapid deterioration.
Residents report that the level of maintenance has declined sharply in recent months. Several areas of the garden have effectively turned into dumping grounds. Morning and evening walkers now limit their routines to a small portion of the park, as large sections are either littered with garbage or taken over by unauthorised activities.
Social activist Pawan Sharma, who recently visited the park, strongly criticised the authorities for their inaction. “It is shameful that in the holy city of Amritsar, a site dedicated to the memory of Sikh master Guru Ram Das and connected to Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s legacy has been allowed to turn into a garbage dump,” he said.
Sharma added that the municipal corporation’s failure and the state government’s indifference have transformed a protected historic monument into an eyesore. “The waste and filth not only ruin its heritage value but also pose a serious health risk to those who visit daily for walks and exercise,” he said.
He urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Local Government Minister Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar to step in and ensure immediate restoration and upkeep of the garden.
Advocate P C Sharma also voiced concern, saying, “Ram Bagh has already become a haven for stray dogs, animals and rats. The growing garbage piles have only worsened the situation. The municipal corporation has completely failed in maintaining the park.”
Residents and activists alike are calling for swift intervention before further damage is done to one of Amritsar’s most historic and once-beautiful public spaces.
