Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina, senior BJP leader and secretary of the Khalsa College Governing Council, expressed the hope that ties between India and Canada will strengthen after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to that country to attend the G7 Summit. In a statement issued here on Friday, Chhina stated that the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney marked a historic and significant step forward in improving bilateral relations between the two countries.
He said the normalisation of relations between the two countries will immensely benefit the Punjabi diaspora in particular and the people of the two countries in general. He said a large number of people from Punjab are settled in Canada and they have their families back home in Punjab.
“With friendly relations between the two countries, people will find it easy to move internationally. Apart from this, trade, business and cultural ties will also improve, besides boosting each other’s economy,” said Chhina.
He thanked PM Modi on behalf of the global Sikh diaspora, calling the visit a “new chapter” in Indo-Canada relations. Chhina emphasised that the development will open new avenues for trade, business and employment opportunities for Indians in Canada and enhance the economic partnership between the two nations. “There is a sense of fulfillment, happiness and optimism among the Punjabi diaspora following PM Modi’s visit,” said Chhina.
Last year, diplomatic tension had escalated between the two countries. He said PM Modi’s visit has now drawn global attention and reflects the Government of India’s commitment to restoring and strengthening international ties with Canada. “A large number of Punjabis reside in Canada were deeply affected by the strained Indo-Canada relations. The closure of the High Commission last year created significant challenges, especially in processing of visas and consular services. However, now a new beginning is being made, all thanks to PM Modi and PM Carney,” added Chhina.
