Ivory Tower GNDU scholar awarded for cancer drug research

Guru Nanak Dev University's Sheetal Vermani, Senior Research Fellow (SRF) in the Department of Chemistry, working under the guidance of Prof Palwinder Singh and Prof Varinder Kaur, has won the 'Best Flash Poster Presenter Award' at the XXJ-NOST 2025 Conference held recently, at the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad.

Sheetal, a research scientist in medicinal chemistry, has been working on developing drugs for the treatment of breast cancer. One of her research on developing drugs or molecules that help in targeting the aromatase enzyme that causes breast cancer was published in the European Medicinal Chemistry Journal. "We have been making progress in developing a line of drugs that fight against breast cancer causing enzymes and these can help amplify or pace up the treatment significantly, though it is an ongoing research and we are making further evaluation," she said.

The prestigious award recognises her outstanding research presentation and the innovative work being carried out at Guru Nanak Dev University in the field of medicinal chemistry. Dr Palvinder said that the university fraternity extends hearty congratulations to Sheetal Vermani and her team of mentors. "Cancer research is one of the most significant areas across the world and many scientists are in the process of developing breakthrough drugs or cure to this disease. We are glad to be a part of that global fraternity," he said.
