Amritsar, November 16

Though a jeweller was assaulted and robbed of gold ornaments worth Rs 1 crore two days ago, local jewellers have failed to learn any lesson from such incidents.

As per police officials, jewellers visit Delhi and other places for their business in routine but they hardly take any safety measures.

“On Friday morning, we have checked private luxury buses outside the railway station and the bus stand and found eight jewellers with gold ornaments,” said Mukhwinder Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (investigations).

Ideally they should take preventive measures such as seeking help of the police so that no such incidents should occur. Instead, they easily fall in the trap of anti-social elements.

Meanwhile, the police have been suspecting the role of a notorious criminal, Nitin Nayyar, in the robbery in which jeweller Surinder Kumar was assaulted and robbed of gold ornaments worth Rs 1 crore from Bhandari Bridge extension here.

Nayyar, who was recently arrested by the Gate Hakima police in an old case and brought on police remand, had escaped from police custody from outside the Division D police station a day before the incident. The police have suspended an ASI and a head constable for dereliction of duty.

The DCP said as the investigations were under progress, they could not share details of the case at the moment. As per information, the police have found a CCTV camera grab from near the railway station in which two-bike borne suspects were seen, though the footage was not clear due to poor resolution.

The police said the role of insiders could not be ruled out as the suspects have apparently tracked him before committing the crime. The victim, Surinder Kumar, was bringing ornaments from Delhi for his new new showroom in the Guru Bazaar area.
