Lokpal summons MC officials after RTI plaint

On a complaint by RTI activist Suresh Sharma, Lokpal Punjab has summoned the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation (MC) and a former officer of the municipal town planning (MTP) wing of the civic body for an inquiry. Suresh Sharma said he had filed a complaint regarding the ongoing illegal construction of commercial buildings in various areas of the city. These seven buildings were located on Albert Road, Nikka Singh Colony, Chowk Farid, 22 number phatak area, Mohni Park and Partap Avenue Chheharta.
Sharma alleged that the buildings were being constructed with the connivance of MC officials. He had forwarded a copy of the complaint to the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar and the Municipal Commissioner. “I have filed a complaint against under-construction five houses on the back side of Mohan International Hotel, houses near Ratnagiri Colony on Albert Road, commercial building without parking shed at Albert Road, basement and commercial building at Nikka Singh Colony, a multi-storey commercial building on the backside of medicine market at Chowk Farid, multi-storey building without parking at 22 number phatak, a commercial building in residential area of Mohani Park and another commercial building at Partap Avenue Chheharta,” said the RTI activist.
Suresh Sharma said after directions from the Local Governments Department, the then Joint Commissioner of the MC had sent his report to the department head office in Chandigarh. Now the Lokpal Punjab has summoned the MC Commissioner and former MTP official for further investigation in the case. Officials of the MC and complainant have been asked to appear before the Lokpal Punjab on January 6.
