In a significant breakthrough, the Amritsar Police Commissionerate has arrested one of the suspects wanted in the Makhan Singh (additional Adda in-charge of a private bus transport) murder case with the help of the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).
He was identified as Lovepreet Singh. He was brought to Amritsar and would be produced in a court tomorrow.
Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar has confirmed his arrest while adding that till now, the police have arrested a total of five persons, including Lovepreet Singh, a resident of Kotla Khurd village here, in the case.
Besides Lovepreet Singh, Dharamvir Singh, Karamvir Singh, Bikramjit Singh and Jaani have already been arrested. They were arrested on different dates recently.
Makhan Singh was gunned down by armed assailants at the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in broad daylight here on November 18.
Soon after the incident, notorious gangsters Donny Bal, Kaushal Chaudhary and Prabh Dassuwal had taken responsibility for the murder while claiming that the deceased was a close confidant of their rival and Category-A gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria.
Initially, the police had claimed that the incident occurred following a heated dispute between employees of two private bus transport companies over picking up of passengers first. While the argument was on, one of the employees, in a fit of rage, pulled out a weapon and opened fire. The assailants fled immediately after the shooting, the police had told.
During investigation and interrogation of the accused, we learnt that Lovepreet, who was allegedly the main conspirator, had escaped to Jamnagar in Gujarat.
“We shared the information with the Gujarat police following which he has been arrested and brought to Amritsar,” said the Police Commissioner. He was working as a helper on daily wages there.
The Jamnagar police searched a residential block in Meghpar and caught him.
