Perturbed over alleged harassment by money lenders, a man and his son committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance here on Friday. The police have booked two suspects and launched further investigation into the matter. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to family members after an autopsy. The deceased were identified as Maninder Singh and Harshveen Singh, both residents of Celebration Enclave, located on the Tarn Taran road here.
Those booked included Inderjit Singh, alias Prince, and Chanpreet Singh. They had given Rs 2.5 lakh on loan to the victims. According to the family of the deceased, the suspects were pressurising father and son to return their money.
Maninderpal Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), said raids were on to arrest the suspects who were absconding following the incident. He said a preliminary probe revealed that the duo had borrowed money from many other people in the market.
The police registered a case on the charge of abetment to suicide on the complaint of Savreen Kaur, daughter of the deceased. She told the police that her father and brother had taken loan from the suspects. The victims had given a cheque to suspects. She saod Maninder and Harshveen were finding it difficult to return the money on time. She said the suspects were threatening her father and brother of getting them imprisoned in a cheque bounce case. Disturbed over this, they ended their life by suicide, she alleged.
