Manager of Coop bank arrested

Amritsar: The Amritsar rural police have nabbed two persons, including the branch manager of the Tarsikka branch of Central Cooperative Bank (CCB), for allegedly bungling Rs 2.83 crore of a cooperative society of Saido Lehal and Bhatti ke village. Besides branch manager Rakesh Kumar, the police also arrested Ram Kishore of Ludhiana, Sukhdev Singh of Sarai village and Sukhbir Singh of Bhatti Ke village. Kulbir Singh, manager of CCB, Amritsar, said the misappropriation came to light when certain cash transactions were found suspicious. Following this, senior bank authorities deputed him to investigate the same. During probe, he collided with the suspects in the case he was probing and swindled Rs 2.82 crore of the society. The police have registered a case under Sections 409, 420 and 120-B of the IPC against them. TNS

Meet over gas pipeline work

Amritsar: Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu and MC Commissioner Komal Mittal held a meeting with officials of the firm laying a gas pipeline in the city, at the MC office here on Wednesday. Firm’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nitin Patil and other officials, including Maqsood Sheikh, Satyan Trivedi and Vijay Kumar Bhardwaj, were present the company. The Mayor asked company officials to submit a blueprint of the gas pipeline work. The firm officials they would first approve the plan and then began the work. “We have asked them to recarpet the dug roads and streets after laying the pipeline,” added Mayor. TNS

Students take cleanliness oath

Amritsar: BBK DAV College for Women organised a Swachhta Pakhwada, an oath taking ceremony, in which NSS volunteers and other students pledge to devote 100 hours for the cause of cleanliness. SDM Vikas Heera was the chief guest on the occasion. The volunteers took a pledge to keep their campus, city and the country clean. Principal Dr Pushpinder Walia supervised a cleanliness drive. She expressed her views on the importance of keeping environment clean. “Foreign countries are free of garbage because they do not indulge in littering,” she said. Lauding the efforts of the NSS volunteers, she said that it was our Fundamental Duty to come work for cleanliness in the surrounding. TNS

21 saplings gifted To Golden Temple

Amritsar: Swami Ji Hoshiarpur Wale on Wednesday gifted 21 saplings of mango and kundi varieties to the Golden Temple. Dr Roop Singh, chief secretary, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, said earlier, pots for planting 10 to 15 feet high shade-providing plants were procured from Mumbai. He said saplings were also planted in vertical and rooftop gardens, besides Guru Ka Bagh, in the Golden Temple complex. He said the vegetation would provide respite to devotees from the heat during the summer. TNS
