Municipal Corporation Commissioner Bikramjit Singh Shergill on Saturday made a surprise visit to several parts of Amritsar city to review sanitation work. Joint Commissioner Dr Jai Inder Singh also inspected cleanliness along the stretch from the Railway Station to India Gate.
During the visit, the MC Commissioner checked areas including Gujrati Basti, Ram Bagh Chowk, Morran Wala Chowk, IDH Market, Mahan Singh Gate, Hall Bazar, Heritage Street, Katra Jaimal Singh and Sikandri Gate. He issued directions for strict enforcement against garbage littering and encroachments, instructing officials to issue challans to violators.
Shergill urged residents not to litter on the roads and to contribute towards keeping Amritsar green and clean. He also directed the Sanitation Wing to work towards a complete ban on single-use plastics. Distributors, wholesalers and manufacturers of such plastics will face action in coordination with the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), he added.
The Enforcement Wing has been asked to act firmly against encroachments on public spaces, particularly along the Heritage Street, so that pedestrians can move freely.
