MC Commissioner reviews city’s mega water supply project
Urges officials to obtain pending NOCs swiftly to prevent delays
Municipal Commissioner Bikramjit Singh Shergill on Thursday reviewed the ongoing Amritsar Bulk Water Supply Project and directed the contractor, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), to accelerate work by deploying additional manpower. The review meeting was convened to assess the progress of various components of the project, which is being implemented under the Punjab Municipal Services Improvement Project (PMSIP) with financial support from the World Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
The project aims to provide treated surface water from the Upper Bari Doab Canal (UBDC) to every household in Amritsar, significantly reducing dependence on depleting groundwater sources. Under the scheme, a state-of-the-art Water Treatment Plant (WTP) with a capacity of 44 crore litres per day is being constructed at Vallah, along with 45 new overhead tanks and a 112-km-long pipeline network across the city.
During the meeting, the MC Commissioner emphasised that the project holds vital importance for ensuring a sustainable and reliable water supply to residents. He directed L&T representatives to expedite the pace of construction and ensure quality control at every stage. He also instructed MC officials to coordinate closely with other government departments to secure pending no-objection certificates (NOCs) without delay so that project execution remains on schedule.
Retired chief engineer and project manager Kuldip Singh Saini, deputy project manager Narinderpal Singh, SE Jitin Vasudeva, and L&T project managers Rahul Patel, Sanjay Singh and Shiv Kumar Soni were among those present. Senior engineers of the municipal corporation attended the meeting.
