MC officials conduct surprise inspection in Cooper Road area

In a strict move against littering and the use of single-use plastics, officials of the Amritsar Municipal Corporation conducted a surprise inspection in the Cooper Road area on Saturday. Acting on the directions of Municipal Commissioner Bikramjit Singh Shergill, Additional Commissioner Surinder Singh carried out the inspection, and ordered immediate action against violators. During the inspection, large quantities of garbage were found scattered around several commercial establishments, including Gyani Tea Stall, Bakewell Bakery and Babbi Fish Corner. Taking serious note of the violations, the Additional Commissioner directed the sanitation staff present on the spot to issue challans to all shopkeepers found littering on the road or using banned single-use plastics.

Accordingly, several challans were issued on the spot to offenders.

Singh said the Cooper Road area was one of the city’s busiest public areas, and littering by shopkeepers not only affected cleanliness but also damaged the city’s image.

He added that civic teams were carrying out daily inspections in different parts of the city to monitor sanitation arrangements.

The Additional Commissioner instructed sanitation staff to conduct regular checks in their respective wards, create awareness among the public against throwing garbage on roads and using single-use plastics, and strictly enforce municipal guidelines by issuing challans in case of violations.

He appealed to all shopkeepers, street vendors and hawkers to maintain cleanliness and refrain from using single-use plastics.

He warned municipal sanitation staff that action would be initiated against the employees concerned for failing to maximise enforcement against violators.
