With the announcement of the polls to the municipal corporation, political activities have started picking up the pace in the city. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has constituted the screening committee to finalise party candidates.
Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Dhaliwal will head the committee. MLA Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar, MLA Jeevanjot Kaur, MLA Dr Jasbir Singh Sandhu and MLA Dr Ajay Gupta have been appointed members of the committee formed for the elections to the Amritsar Municipal Corporation. Zone state secretary Gurdev Singh Lakhna, Lok Sabha in-charge Iqbal Singh Bhullar, district in-charge Manish Aggarwal, chairman Jaspreet Singh, senior leader Jaskaran Badesha have been appointed as members.
Senior leaders of APP claimed that development works have been done on a large scale in Amritsar by them and they will win the MC elections with a majority. The AAP has received 750 applications to contest the elections in 85 wards of the city.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party held a meeting with the proposed party candidates and made the strategy for the polls. Harvinder Singh Sandhu, president, BJP district unit, said, “The party and its workers are ready to contest the elections. We had the major lead in all the urban assembly constituencies during the Lok Sabha elections. We will sustain the lead and form the MC General House.
The screening committee of the Congress, led by Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa, also held a meeting to finalise the names of candidates. The Congress got around 450 applications from the aspirants to contest the elections. The party will announce its candidates soon, said Bajwa.
