The district unit of the Mid-Day Meal Workers Union, Punjab, staged a protest in front of the District Education Office (Elementary) here on Thursday against forcefully asking the workers to open their accounts in Canara Bank.
Mid-day meal workers from the district, under the leadership of Rajwant Kaur Marhana, gathered in front of the office of the DEO and condemned the instructions. The workers said as they have failed to open their accounts in Canara Bank, the officials have stopped transferring their contribution (remuneration) in their old bank accounts as a result of which they were facing problems in meeting their daily domestic expenditure.
Rajwant Kaur, Dharam Singh and other leaders of the union, while addressing the workers, said that the officials have been putting pressure on them to open their accounts in Canara Bank branches which is not possible due to lack of sufficient branches of the bank in the district.
The union leaders submitted a memorandum to the officials and asked them not to impose the orders as selection of the bank is the right of the customers.
