Several manhole covers are missing or lying broken in the Ranjit Avenue area, creating a hazardous condition for commuters. One such open manhole near the Rose Garden in Ranjit Avenue has been identified as a significant risk, prompting residents living nearby to place tree trunks and leaves around it to alert passersby.

Residents of E-Block claim that they have filed multiple complaints with the Amritsar Improvement Trust (AIT), but their concerns remain unaddressed. A visitor to Rose Garden warned that the Amritsar Improvement Trust’s negligence could lead to serious accidents. “The manhole cover is missing for the last one month. I notice it daily and alert people to stay away from the manhole. A number of children visit the park to play. In case someone falls into it, it would prove dangerous,” said Naveen Kumar, a visitor.

Jagjeet Singh Suchu, president of the Residents’ Association, stated that missing and damaged sewer covers are not limited to the Rose Garden area, the problem is in fact widespread in Ranjit Avenue. “More than 20 sewer manhole covers need to be replaced or newly installed. AIT officials claim they lack funds. I have written several times, and recently, an AIT employee visited the area. We showed him all the broken manhole covers, but he replaced only one,” he said.

Residents continue to urge the authorities to address the problem before it leads to serious injuries or fatalities.

Another resident expressed frustration, emphasising the urgency of the issue. “These covers should be installed immediately. There are some sewer manholes, where residents put bricks to alert commuters. The AIT is waiting for an accident to happen before taking action,” he remarked.
