‘Miyawaki forest’ to come up in Amritsar

The Municipal Corporation Amritsar announced to develop Miyawaki Native Dense Forest, a modern plantation method used for afforestation at Chali (40) Khu area. MC Commissioner Harpreet Singh awarded a project to Vardhman Special Steel Limited, Ludhiana, to develop Miyawaki Native Dense Forest, for which the MC will provide land as per site plan but the actual work will only be began after approval of the concept plan. Amit Dhawan, senior manager, Vardhman Special Steel Limited, visited the MC office and gave a presentation on the project.
“This Miyawaki Native Dense Forest, a modern plantation method used for afforestation was developed by Japanese ecologist Dr Akira Miyawaki. It is aimed at creating indigenous forest equivalent to 100 years within 10 years. In practice, the soil is amended for optimal growth outcomes, seeding are spaced very close together to induce competition and mulch is used to conserve soil moisture and suppress weed growth,” the commissioner said. “This methodology has showed positive results in various geographies and temperatures. Such a forest can be created in a private backyard, public open spaces, educational campuses, public parks ,” he added.
Chali Khu (forty wells), sunk in the east of the city in 1904 and later were converted to tube wells for direct supply to the tap water distribution system, initiated by the British.
