MLA from Amritsar Central assembly constituency Dr Ajay Gupta inaugurated the 69th Punjab Inter-District School Sports Wrestling Championship at the Wrestling Stadium in Gol Bagh here on Thursday. Dr Gupta said players from 23 districts participated in the championship on the day. He laid stress on the importance of making a career in sports along with studies, adding that strong support of sports at the school level helps athletes reach greater heights in their respective fields.
The MLA said the Punjab government is taking appropriate steps to promote sports. He said the state government has already waged a war against drugs. “It is very important to involve the youth in sports to end drug addiction,” he said and added that the Punjab government was constructing more than 3,000 playgrounds across the state. To promote sports, the Punjab government is providing extensive facilities to the players and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann himself is paying special attention to sports.
Addressing a long-pending demand, he said all appropriate steps will be taken to make the Gol Bagh Wrestling Stadium even better. On the occasion, Vikram Sharma, coach of the Indian wrestling team, thanked MLA Dr Ajay Gupta and honoured him.
