Member of Parliament Gurjeet Singh Aujla today held a meeting with the MC Commissioner and officials of various departments of the Municipal Corporation to review the conditions of water supply and garbage lifting across the city. The officials from water supply, sanitation, waste management and other allied services were present as MC Commissioner Harpreet Singh also discussed plantation drive and expansion of green areas in the city.

Describing the problem of water contamination and garbage collection in city as grave, Aujla said, “The condition of water supply and garbage is very unhealthy, the situation is sensitive. Areas like Chheherta, Anngarh, Sultanwind and Gumtala, all in the periphery of city, are facing unhygienic conditions and the problem of contaminated water supply. We need to address this immediately. So, we have discussed at length the matters at hand and their solutions,” he said.

Aujla said that he has taken up the matter with the authorities concerned in Chandigarh as well. “A state-level review committee has been formed to seek fast dispersal of the technical and financial challenges in ensuring that Amritsar’s sanitation issues are resolved. The dispute between MC and company in charge of garbage collection and management was also discussed.”

The Municipal Commissioner has been in dispute with the private company in charge of garbage picking for the past several months, directly impacting the garbage disposal system in city, resulting in heaps of waste lying everywhere. The MC had issued instructions to take action against the solid waste management company for not fulfilling the terms of the contract. MC Commissioner Harpreet Singh had also instructed officials to impose penalty as per clause of the contract on the solid waste management firm which breached the condition. Aujla today also discussed the expansion of green belts to counter rising air pollution in city.
