In a significant step towards flood relief and rehabilitation, Dr Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Chairman of Sun Foundation, launched large-scale flood rehabilitation and desilting operations in the Ajnala block of Amritsar district on Sunday.
As part of the operations, 15 tractors and five JCB machines were deployed for desilting work in village Nangal Sohal and Mehmat Mandira Wali and adjoining areas.
After offering Ardas at the site, MP Sahney highlighted that nearly 40,000 hectares of crops have been damaged by up to 8 ft of waterlogging, leaving poor farmers in urgent need of support in these villages. He assured that machinery, their personnel and labour will remain deployed until villagers are fully satisfied and ready to cultivate their next crop. The foundation has also sent 10,000 PP bags for establishing a bundh (stop dam). Former cabinet minister and local MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal was also present with MP Sahney.
Later, the MP visited the border village of Dariya Mussa where he distributed relief materials to the flood-affected families.
Taking note of poor road conditions and the lack of a local high school, which is forcing children to walk nearly 8 kilometres to the nearest institution, Dr Sahney immediately announced that he will provide a school bus to the government school of the village. He also assured villagers that he would take up the matter of upgrading the school to higher classes with the Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains.
