To create awareness among students regarding conservation that is collaborative and conducive to all species, the Chemical Society, Department of Chemistry, Guru Nanak Dev University, organised a two-day nature camp at Takhni Forest Reserve, Hoshiarpur, under the environment education programme of the Ministry of Environment & Climate Change with support from Punjab State Council for Science & Technology.
A total of 48 Master’s students from the Department of Chemistry and Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences along with Dr Nivedita Chaudhri and Dr Gopal Singh from the Department of Chemistry participated.
Providing insights into medicinal plant conservation, wildlife resources and rescue, noted taxonomist and researcher Varinder Kumar, conducted various sessions around the walk with the students. Sharing his knowledge of the region’s medicinal plants and endangered species, he provided extensive and in-depth knowledge on native medicinal species of plants and also spoke about the art of crafting compelling narratives of nature through short videos. He also laid stress on conservation and cultivation of plants with extremely high medicinal and research value, amid the scare of climate change and global warming.
Manik Kapoor, Conservator at the forest reserve, delved into the intricacies of wildlife rescue, particularly emphasising on the tools and techniques essential for snake rescue operations.
