Newly-appointed Police Commissioner Vikramjit Duggal today sought people’s coordination in maintaining law and order in the city. He replaced Sukhchain Singh Gill, who has now taken over as Commissioner of Police in Jalandhar. He held a meeting with senior police officials while formally joining his duty at his office.
Police jawans also presented him a guard of honour before he joined his duties.
“A citizen should consider himself a cop in the civil dress while the policemen should consider themselves a civilian in police uniform. This would help in having better cooperation and coordination between police and public and deterrent against criminal elements,” he pointed out.
On repeated incidents of firing and gang wars, he said, though the government had managed to nail majority of gangsters, remaining would also be behind the bars soon. He said those who took law into their hands would also be dealt with an iron hand.
“I am fortunate to serve the holy city twice. First as the SSP Amritsar rural and now as Police Commissioner, Amritsar city,” he said. He said being a major tourist destinations, it has its own challenges including traffic snarls. He said he also tried to address this problem.
