Newly built Rs 50L cowshed inaugurated at Old Focal Point

Just two days after an illegal abattoir was busted in the city, the management of the Focal Point Industrial Welfare Association has initiated construction of an additional cowshed at the Old Focal Point Gaushala, with plans to build two more to house an additional 300 stray cows roaming city streets.

MLA Jeevenjot Kaur and Mayor Jatinder Singh Moti Bhatia jointly inaugurated the newly constructed cowshed on Sunday. Built at a cost of Rs 50 lakh, the shed is part of a larger effort to manage the growing stray cattle population in the area.

The gaushala, spread over 10 acres, currently shelters 1,150 non-milking cows. Its upkeep costs exceed Rs 25 lakh per month, with the expenses being met through voluntary contributions from members of the association.

Sundeep Khosla, president of the Focal Point Industrial Welfare Association, pointed out that the Municipal Corporation has collected nearly Rs 8 crore in cow cess but has not provided any diet money to the gaushala. He demanded that the collected funds be utilised for the welfare of the animals.

He added that the new cowshed will be ready in two months and that there is enough space to build two more sheds. This expansion aims to resolve the problem of stray cattle on city roads.
