Every year with the onset of winter, the Education Department begins the winter school uniform distribution in all government schools of the district. And while the funds are granted to the school management committees at the beginning of the session, any delay in distribution or procurement means inviting voluntary organisations to aid in uniform distribution.
Students of pre-primary classes and the students of Class 1 to 8 are given free winter uniforms, at the cost of Rs 600 per child, and only by inviting tenders. Only after quality assurance are the uniforms distributed among the students. In the meantime, given the cold wave gripping the region, Voice of Amritsar (VOA), a non-profit organisation, conducted a woollen distribution drive at Government Elementary School, village Heir, Airport road, Amritsar where 170 woollen jackets were distributed to the students. Under its annual campaign, VOA initiated the distribution of school bags, stationery, school uniforms and woollens. Last week, VOA distributed 180 sweaters to students of Government Senior Secondary School, Kot Baba Deep Singh.
Under the education policy of the state government, the students are provided with winter uniform, including trousers, shirt, pair of shoes, socks, cap or turban and warm sweater for boys. The girls get kameez, salwar, dupatta, sweater, shoes and socks.
