NGO launches helpline to assist farmers

Akaal Purakh Ki Fauj (APKF), an NGO, has launched a helpline number (62837-52727) to assist farmers and flood-affected families in securing their insurance claims.

The move comes after repeated reports of farmers being unable to access insurance benefits despite paying premiums.

The organisation cited the case of Rosepreet Singh from Bal Labhey Darya village, who lost his crops in the recent floods. While transporting stranded villagers in his tractor-trolley, his vehicle was stolen. Although insured, Singh has been struggling for months to get compensation.

“Rosepreet Singh’s case reflects a wider problem. Many farmers with crop, cattle or house loans face hurdles in claiming benefits, even when premiums are deducted directly from their accounts,” Jaswinder Singh, former SGPC member and convenor, APKF, said.

He said the organisation has joined hands with the Lawyers for Human Rights Group, led by senior advocate Navkiran Singh, to provide legal support. Dr Khushal Singh of Chandigarh’s Kendri Singh Sabha will also coordinate the legal response with teams of advocates, he added. The organisation has also urged the Punjab Government to ensure settlement of insurance claims within one month, make public data on crop insurance under Central schemes, and frame a policy for farmers who have permanently lost land to river erosion.
