After being appointed as Local Bodies Minister, Inderbir Singh Nijjar conducted a review meeting on the surface-based water project and the solid waste management project with MC officials at the Ranjit Avenue head office here today.

The 24×7 canal water supply project was launched in April 2021 at a cost of Rs 665.32 crore. MC officials gave detailed information to the ministers and MLAs about the construction of overhead water tanks and water pipes to be laid in the city.

This project will benefit the city residents for up to 30 years. The water from the plant will be completely purified and reach every home. For this, 51 new overhead water tanks will be built in the city and 24 old water tanks will be repaired. A 112-km-long water pipeline will also be laid in the city. The project implementing company will operate and maintain the entire project for 10 years.

Nijjar said the canal-based water supply was the need of the hour. He said there was no scarcity of funds for this project. He said priority was being given to the supply if clean water, good sewage system, streetlights and roads throughout Punjab.

He said the garbage heaps from Bhagtanwala would be removed. He said, “Due to different reasons, the bioremediation company has not been able to work efficiently at the dumping ground. Now all deficiencies will be removed and its work will be accelerated in coming days.”

MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, MLA Dr Ajay Gupta, MLA Dr Jasbir Singh Sandhu, MC Commissioner Kumar Saurabh Raj were present on the occasion. The minister was honoured by the Commissioner, corporation officers and Municipal Corporation Employees Unions.
