The district branch of the Punjab NREGA workers Union organised a protest in front of the District Administration Complex (DAC) and presented a memorandum to the officials. The aim of the protest was to stress the current demands and issues of the NREGA workers.
Ranjit Singh Shakri, district president, along with Badal Singh, Roor Singh and Joga Singh were among others who addressed the NREGA workers, who came from different parts of the district. The leaders condemned that workers were not being given jobs, nor were they being given unemployment allowance. The leaders said as the grants of the NREGA had been reduced and the development works had been stopped in certain villages, as a result it became difficult for the NREGA workers to get work.
The leaders stressed on their demands of 200 days work, the payment to be given on the spot, weekly off for the workers, and facilities for kids of the women at the site of work.
They also stressed to provide residential plots for the homeless families under Pradhan Mantri Avas Yojna and grants to construct on the plots.
