Dr Amit Sood, an eminent bariatric and weight loss surgeon, in an interaction with media here said obesity should not be taken lightly as he listed health risks of obese people and shared information regarding bariatric surgery as a long term solution for weight loss.
The most common cause of rising obesity now-a-days is sedentary lifestyle and social habits that lead to frequent dining out. There is an increasing tendency to eat junk food or overeat at buffets. He said obesity can contribute to the growth of associated co-morbid conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, infertility and cancer. He added that around 60 per cent patients wait for more than 6-10 years to seek medically sound weight-loss procedures.
He claimed that in urban Amritsar, more than one-third of the population is obese and the proportion is higher in women, of whom an around 42 per cent are obese. He added that obesity in women is associated with depression.
