A large number of properties belonging to the Municipal Corporation (MC), Amritsar, have been occupied by old lease holders, influential individuals, religious organisations and self-style godmen and nihangs. The MC has recently initiated a drive to reclaim their properties and possession of some land has been taken.

“We have written to the SGPC to take action against those who have occupied the government properties. The MC officials should file complaints against such elements. The MC has already lost more than 100 properties due to negligence of officials,” said former senior deputy mayor Raman Bakshi .

Earlier, the MC misplaced over 100 documents related to the leased out properties. During 2002-05, there were around 262 leased out properties. But now, the MC has only 160 properties on record.
