Online events mark Earth Day

Several NGOs organised online events to mark Earth Day here on Wednesday.

“As we all sit home and reflect upon our existence, mankind is rethinking its contribution to the planet. While most of our material possessions await unlockdown, people are wondering if humanity has erred and is paying the price. It is an opportune moment indeed for this reflection to produce a caring humanity, sensitive to its natural resources, and kind to its environment. We merit to be chastised again for our decades of misdemeanours towards our Mother Earth,” said Gunbir Singh, chairperson, WWF-Punjab.

Meanwhile, EcoSikh organised an online session with Sunny Verma, director, Aforestt, an initiative to built mini forests across the country to revive the green cover. The session had information about creating native mini forests, their sustainability and impact on ecosystems.

“The idea is to turn polluted and overcrowded urban cities into living forest cities through consistent efforts,” said Sunny.

EcoSikh has been collaborating with civic bodies and individual organisations to establish Nanak Bagichis (Guru Nanak Sacred forests) to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.
