The Pathankot District Youth Congress Committee has urged the Union government to increase the compensation amount announced by PM Narendra Modi, which is a “cruel joke on the farmers of Punjab who have lost everything in the deluge”.

The committee president, Abhyam Sharma, submitted a memorandum to the Union government through Deputy Commissioner (DC) Aditya Uppal to be forwarded to the Central government.

During his recent visit, Modi had announced financial assistance of Rs 1,600 crore in addition to the Rs 12,000 crore already available with the state.

Abhyam said the amount was a “drop in the ocean.” He added that the PM’s special package was grossly inadequate. “This amount is just 8 per cent of the total loss suffered by the state. It should be increased to at least Rs 25,000 crore,” he said.

Speaking about Rs 12,000 crore, which the Union government claimed was lying with the state, Abhyam said the AAP government had misused this money which had been allocated under the State Disaster Relief Fund.
