With the arrest of a drug peddler, the city police today claimed to have busted a cross-border smuggling network and recovered 3.5 kg of heroin along with Rs 1 lakh drug money from his possession.
The suspect was identified as Gurmej Singh of Bhindi Saida village in Ajnala.
Police Commissioner (CP) Ranjit Singh Dhillon said Gurmej was directly in touch with Pakistan-based drug smugglers and had been engaged in drug trafficking. During preliminary interrogation, he admitted that his Pakistan-based accomplices were using drones for transporting drug consignments into the Indian territory, the CP said. He said investigations were on to establish backward and forward links of the suspect to expose the entire drug smuggling network. More drug seizures were likely to be made during further course of investigations, the CP said.

He was waiting for someone to deliver the consignment in the Chheharta area. He was arrested from Ghanupur Kale village, the ADCP said. Apart from recovering heroin, the police also impounded suspect’s motorcycle on which he was travelling.
A case had been registered against the suspect under Sections 21C and 27A of the NDPS Act at the Chheharta police station in this connection.
