People warned over social media posts

The Pathankot SSP has warned influencers against posting provocative messages on social media platforms even as the police have set up a cyber-patrolling cell to deal with such cases.

SSP Daljinder Singh Dhillon said, “Social media, while offering numerous benefits like staying connected and accessing information, also presents several disadvantages. These include privacy concerns, spread of misinformation, cyberbullying and other mental issues.”

He said it had come to the notice of the police that some people were intentionally posting provocative messages to disturb the harmony and peace in the town.

He said the ease of sharing information on social media platforms allows for the rapid spread of false and misleading content, including fake news and conspiracy theories, which never existed in the first place. “This can have serious consequences, can cause panic among residents and even incite violence,” he added.

Such posts are carefully followed by the police because it can damage communal harmony or incite religious animosity in this border district.

SSP Dhillon said the Pathankot police had established a cyber-patrolling cell which will look into such posts. “I am issuing a strict warning to social media influencers. They no longer enjoy a free run now. They will be booked in criminal cases if found to be indulging in posting controversial or provocative messages,” said the SSP.
