Phulkari WOA, admn launch drive to tackle cervical cancer
Phulkari Women of Amritsar (WOA) launched the ‘Nirmaya Shakti Programme’, in collaboration with the district administration.
The programme aims at spreading awareness about cervical cancer among women residing in border villages by training the ASHA and Anganwadi workers.
The training will be given by Phulkari WOA’s Conquer Cancer team, comprising doctors, medical health professionals and volunteers.
The awareness session began with a ‘Nukkad Natak’, presented by the Conquer Cancer team. It was organised in collaboration with BBK DAV College for Women.
Sheetal Sohal, president of the Phulkari WOA, said, “Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths among women in India. Since it is preventable with regular screening and vaccination, the event served the purpose of educating women about the risk factors and preventive measures.”
Phulkari WOA has so far organised 153 awareness sessions, 13 screening camps, educated 6 lakh people, screened 1,300 women and vaccinated 452 girls.
Spearheading the movement, members of Phulkari WOA, including Nidhi Sindhwani, and Praneet Bubber also addressed the areas of concern.
“The ultimate aim behind these sessions is to educate communities about cervical cancer, facilitate screening and ensure affordable treatment,” said Sohal.
