Pingalwara opens special wards for abandoned patients in Amritsar

Manifesting its spirit of selfless service as envisaged by Bhagat Puran Singh who founded the Pingalwara to care for the homeless and destitute, the organisation has inaugurated wards for abandoned patients at two hospitals here on Saturday.
Pingalwara Charitable Trust president Dr Inderjit Kaur said that the special wards have been opened at Government Medical College and Sri Guru Ram Das Charitable Hospital. She said that hospitals often get patients who are abandoned and do not have anyone to take care of them during their stay there.
“The special wards for these patients would have volunteers who would take care of them as their family members,” she said.
Pingalwara earlier got requests from Government Medical College to look for volunteers who could take care of such patients. However, it faced difficulty in deputing sewadars at all departments.
Dr Jagdeep Singh, vice-president of Pingalwara, said, “It was a long-pending wish to set up a system for care of such patients at hospitals.” He said that state-of-the-art facilities would be provided at these wards.
The facilities to be provided include food, clothes, medicines and personal care of the patients. Each hospital would constitute a three-member committee to ensure that only needy patients are admitted to these wards.
The inauguration of the ward at Sri Guru Ram Das Charitable Hospital was graced by SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhammi who said that Pingalwara society has stayed true on the path of service shown by Bhagat Puran Singh. He said that opening of these wards at a time when the death anniversary of Bhagat Puran Singh is being observed is true homage to the great soul.
At GMC, college principal Dr Rajiv Devgan and medical superintendent Dr Karanjit Singh stated that association with Pingalwara would help them provide better care to the homeless and abandoned patients.
