Pioneer who worked for region’s industrial growth

The contribution of the late industrialist Bawa Paramjit Singh to the industrial development of Punjab is truly remarkable and deserves to be remembered. It was through his dedicated efforts that Goindwal Sahib became the country’s first Industrial Nucleus Complex in 1980.

Records indicate that Bawa Paramjit Singh maintained close communication with Charanjit Chanana, who was the then Minister of State in the Ministry of Industries, to secure the Industrial Nucleus Complex for Goindwal Sahib.

Bawa submitted 448 applications from aspiring entrepreneurs in the region who wanted to establish small-scale ancillary units. The first unit to be set up at the complex was ‘Bawa Shoe,’ and as many as 2,000 workers, mostly women, were employed at the facility.

In addition to his industrial initiatives, Bawa Paramjit Singh took steps to improve educational facilities for the children of workers and residents in Goindwal Sahib. He established Amarpuri Public School, which was affiliated to the CBSE, addressing the lack of quality educational facilities in the region.

About 30 years ago, Bawa Paramjit Singh and his wife died in a car accident while travelling from Goindwal Sahib to their residence in Jalandhar, near Goindwal Sahib. Despite his untimely death, Bawa’s legacy lives on, and entrepreneurs continue to recognise and appreciate his services and contributions.
