As temperatures soar across Punjab, social and religious organisations have stepped up to offer relief to commuters through the traditional practice of setting up Chabeel stalls, distributing sweetened water at various locations in Amritsar and along main roads. However, the noble gesture has sparked an environmental concern due to the rampant use of single-use plastic items such as disposable glasses, plates and spoons.
Environmental activists and many residents have raised an alarm over the careless dumping of used plastic items along roadsides, into rainwater chambers and open drains. These materials, often used during langars and chabeels, not only become an eyesore but also pose serious threats to the environment and urban infrastructure. After the events, heaps of plastic waste can be seen littering the streets, choking drains and contributing to waterlogging during the rainy season.
“The intention to serve water and food in this heat is commendable, but the widespread use of single-use plastic is problematic. It harms the environment and violates the ban on such items,” said a local environmentalist Pawan Shamra. Despite the district administration launching awareness and enforcement drives against vendors selling banned plastic products, enforcement remains lax and usage continues unchecked.
“The plastic waste generated from such events contributes significantly to drain blockages across the city. We conduct regular inspections in the markets and educate vendors about the hazards of single-use plastic. However, despite our efforts, the use continues, particularly during religious and social gatherings,” said a sanitary inspector of the Municipal Corporation.
Activists have suggested a shift to environment-friendly alternatives. “Organisations must switch to reusable utensils, especially steel glasses, while serving water. This will not only reduce the plastic footprint but also align with the spirit of sewa by caring for the environment,” said Amarjeet Singh, a volunteer of the Kar Sewa Bhuri Wale sect.
