The two plays staged at the ongoing Nutan International Theatre Festival 2020 at Virsa Vihar were all about the complexities of personal relationships when faced with challenges.
The first play of the day was Ajra Chaudhary’s script, titled ‘Yeh Meri Wife Hai’ which was directed by Pankaj Sharma. It hit the chords of the audience, quite visibly so. Story of a happily-married couple who soon turn strangers to each other was a reflection of the kind of challenges that contemporary marriages face.
While everything goes smoothly for a year after marriage, with the arrival of children and growing responsibilities of family, the couple often engages in blame-game, turning every situation from bad to worse. Highlighting the gender roles in families and the burden of expectations usually couples have from each other, the play was sensitive when it required and critical as well. Navdurga Art Forum from Jammu and Kashmir staged the play.
The second play of the day title ‘Padosan’ was staged by a Delhi-based group. Written by Neeraj and directed by Priyanka Sharma, it was a love triangle where in bonds of friendship and professional relationships get mixed up as the three protagonists deal with love and its after-effects.
The contemporary and modern love story where a relationship is based not on blind love, but respect and professional statures, ‘Padosan’ questions the vanity of love in the time when there is a big chance of corrupting that love with one’s personal and professional ambitions.
