Police remand for Bihar residents

Two Bihar residents, who were nabbed by the local police in connection with a case of extortion racket, were produced in a court here on Saturday. The court sent them to two-day police custody.

The city is witnessing a spurt in extortion calls and with their arrest the police claimed to have solved a number of such cases.

A preliminary probe revealed that their kingpin Mazhar Khan was hiding somewhere in Gujarat.

Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigations), said police teams had been despatched to locate and arrest him.

The police nabbed two Bihar residents, identified as Prinsh Kumar (21) of Siswa Mauje village and Vikas Kumar (22) of Sewarahan village in Lukarian tehsil, East Champaran district (Bihar). The police recovered their laptops, mobile phones and fake IDs on social media.

Investigations revealed that ransom calls were being made by cyber criminals, who were trying to extort money from doctors by posing as gangsters.

They used to create a Whatsapp ID and then used to call through internet calls. They used to identify themselves as members of notorious gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi, Goly Brar and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria. Bishnoi and Bhagwanpuria were arrested by Punjab Police for investigating Sidhu Moosewala murder case.

The cyber fraudsters took the advantage of this and started making extortion calls after finding contact numbers of the victim through the Internet.
