Police speed up probe into cases under Prisons Act

Expressing his unhappiness over pending investigation into cases regarding the recovery of mobile phones and gang wars inside high-security Central Jail premises, Police Commissioner Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill had directed the police officials concerned to get a probe into them completed soon.

Following this, the police brought prisoners, from whom the mobile phones were confiscated in the recent past, on production warrant. On Wednesday, the police arrested five prisoners after bringing them on production warrant. According to information, the Islamabad police arrested alleged gangster Gurbir Singh, Rahul alias Dana, Abbas Akhtar, Harpreet Singh and Vishal Kumar. Jail authorities had confiscated mobile phones from their possession on different dates while Harpreet and Vishal were held for a clash in the jail complex.

Earlier, the police had brought notorious gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria on production warrant from Patiala Jail. He was booked for a clash occurred in Amritsar Central Jail in September in which his supporters clashed with another notorious gangster Shubham and his accomplices.

Besides Shubham, four more gangsters were injured in the clash. They were identified as Manpreet Singh, Deepak Kumar alias Deepu Bihari, Rahul Saini, Naveen Kumar and Manpreet Singh.

Along with them, the police have booked Raj Kumar alias Raja Paharia, Karamjit Singh, Bikramjit Singh, Gurmeet Singh, Amanpreet Rinka, Rohit Sharma, Dalbir Singh alias Beera, Harmajit Singh, Vikas and Baljinder Singh Gandhi under Section 52 of the Prisons Act.

The Bhagwanpuria group had updated the incident on their social network platform while alleging that Shubham spoke against Jaggu and some other members of the gang. Jaggu suspected that he had helped the police nab his accomplices.

A senior police official while preferring anonymity said though the incident occurred on September 3, the plan of the assault was made around a month before the incident. The Patiala jail had also seized a mobile from Jaggu at that time.

He said with the deployment of CRPF personnel in the jail premises, the authorities were hoping to curb the sneaking of mobiles inside the jail complex. Investigation revealed that the notorious criminals managed to get access to mobile phones and in this the involvement of some black sheeps also came to light. During investigation, the police were trying to identify such black sheeps. — TNS
